We are a women's rugby club located in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area of Minnesota. The Amazons have a tradition of rugby excellence dating back to 1982. An eclectic group of individuals, we are grad students, teachers, programmers, engineers, health care workers and firefighters. We range in age from 18 to 40+ and come in all shapes and sizes. What we do have in common is a passion for the game of rugby, as well as for certain entertainments after the game.
Rugby is a bit of an addiction to those of us who play it. Maybe you start out in college, joining a team as a social outlet, or because you can't play any varsity sports, or you want something to do in your off season. Then there's that first time they throw you in a scrum, or the first successful tackle you make, and you realize that this is like nothing you've ever done before. The camaraderie is like no other sport. You eat and drink with the other team after spending 80 minutes beating on each other. What other sport can claim that?
Many current and former Amazons are active in rugby coaching and administration. Recent Amazon Hall of Fame inductee Anne Barry is the former president of USA rugby, our coach Roger Bruggemeyer is a national coaching instructor who also coached the Midwest Select Side team, and many Amazons are involved in coaching at the college and high school level.
As part of our effort in staying a top-ranked club, the Amazons keep a competitive regular season schedule, mixing matches with other top teams in the country into our league schedule. We often travel to locales such as Boston, Maryland, Atlanta, Colorado and San Francisco in search of good games. We also have a strong touring tradition, with recent visits to England, Ireland and Holland. The Amazons are active in supporting the growth of rugby at the college and high school level. Every summer we take several college players to a tournament in Winnipeg, Canada.
The Amazons always welcome new players, whether you're an accomplished club player, a college player looking to move to the next level, or an occasional athlete who has never touched a rugby ball. The Twin Cities are consistently ranked well in quality of life surveys, with good job prospects, a variety of night life and cultural activities, and reasonable traffic and cost of living. Contact us if you have questions or meet us at one of our practices.
