Spring Season is Here!

As the rest of the city starts to climb out of its slumber and venture back into the sun, it is also time for the rugby players to emerge from their winter homes (or weightrooms) and get back out on the pitch. Luckily, the Zons have matches coming up as soon as next weekend in Iowa! Practice will resume this coming week on Tuesday the 20th, and Thursday the 22nd out at the Snelling Practice feild, then will continue every Thursday at 6pm for the rest of the season. Anyone planning to play this spring or next fall should be attending these practices, and anyone who wants to join the Zons is welcome to show up, we’d love to have you! See you all at practice!

Spring Season Schedule is Out!

Winter is long, cold, and supposed to be snowy… but while we have had very little snow this winter, we all know that rugby has been even harder to come by. But, good news! The Zons have a few games scheduled for the spring! If you are a fan, we would love to see you! If you are looking for a team to play with, we would love to play with you! If you are already a Zon, make sure you get a hold of Roger and let him know your plans for the spring and also this coming fall (by Feb. 10th)! Either way I think we can all agree that looking forward to spring is even better when we get to look forward to rugby too! Hope to see you all there!

Beer Bust/Silent Auction TONIGHT!

Tonight is the night of the Twin City Amazon Beer Bust and Silent Auction fundraiser hosted by Tiffany’s Sports Lounge in St. Paul(www.tiffanysportslounge.com/). Tickets are $10 for the beer bust (7-9pm) and the silent auction will be announced by the end of the night! The Zons will be there all night, find one there or get a hold of your favorite one to buy your beer bust tickets from!! (If you can’t make it, and want to donate, contact Marlo! Congratulations to Amanda “Worm” Kingzett!

Our very own “Worm” was recognized by Rugby Magazine as Women’s Forward of the Year for 2011! (Link to Rugby Mag)

This is a great accomplishment for any player and we know that she definitely deserves it with her great play this year, along with her committment to continue playing with us even though she is currently going to grad school in Montana!

Many other Amazons were mentioned throughout this year in review by Rugby Magazine, for being part of the Midwest Women’s team, Collegiate All American Tour, Nations Cup, and USA 7′s play.

Another exciting year is yet to come! Go Zons!

The Twin Cities Amazons would like to wish everybody a happy holidays! We hope that everyone has had as fun of a year as we have! Now is a great time to celebrate, relax, and give thanks for everything we have accomplished, and everyone who has supported us! Most of all we all cherish the wonderful relationships we have built through rugby, and hope everyone in our rugby family is excited as we are for the future!

Amazon in Dubai

After a successful season, most Amazons are taking a short rest before beginning their off-season training… but for one Amazon there is no rest. Kaelene Lundrstrum, most of us know her as Lunde, is currently at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA preparing for the Emirates Airline Dubai Sevens Tournament that kicks off on Friday December 2. She will be playing with a solid list of Eagles put together by coach Ric Suggitt. In Dubai they will compete against Australia, South Africa, Canada, England, Brazil, China, and Spain. This is one of many 7′s tournaments to come, followed by USA Sevens (Las Vegas: February 10-12, 2012), the Hong Kong Sevens (March 23-25, 2012), and the Amsterdam Sevens (May 19-20, 2012). This is an exciting time for women’s rugby and a great time to cheer on our favorite 6 foot tall wing! Scrumhalf Connection may have some coverage of the tournament, and we will keep as many updates on here as possible!

Amazons Place 2nd at National Tournament

The Amazons returned home this week boasting their best season result in over a decade, and also with high expectations for next year. The Amazons have come a long way in the last year, and with successful recruiting tactics and strong veterans to rely upon, the future looks very bright for the team.

Also, flanker Amanda “Worm” Kingzett received MVP of the match for her great efforts in the final, we’re all very proud!!

The Amazons would like to thank everyone who supported them this season, and send out a special thank you to all the Amazon “Old Girls” who came to support in Virginia Beach this weekend!

Amazons Take Down Beantown, and Go to the Championship!

Friday afternoon the Amazons played Beantown in possibly the closest and most exciting matchup of the day. The sidelines were filled with fans and the feild was filled with determined players. Beantown started off strong and drove in a quick try right away, but the momentum was never on either team’s side for very long. Back and forth the Zons and Beantown went, both scoring trys and playing hard. The Amazons had an unwaivering forward attack that was answered by the strongest tackling defense they had faced all season, and Beantown boasted quick back play with long breakaways. For anyone watching it was definitely one of those games that was not easy on the heart, a real “nailbiter” that was fought right down to the last minute. With less than 15 minutes left the game was tied 22-22, Beantown had the ball and marched into Zon’s territory. In a moment of glory Beantown chipped in a drop goal to bring the score to 22-25 Beantown up. The Zons however were not done yet and the forwards went into action and punched the ball in strike after strike until the backs found an opening, and put in a try with 3 minutes left to play. With the conversion kick in as well the Zons were now up 29-25. More back and forth play ended the game with a kick out of bounds by the Zons.

After a day to rest and regroup, the Zons will take on Berkeley in their first WPL Championship game on Sunday at 3pm (eastern). It will be a great matchup of two teams with different styles of play. Be sure to follow us on Twitter for real time updates!!

Amazons To Take on Beantown

The Zons have been waiting all year to be back at nationals. Winning the big match on Sunday is of course on everyones minds coming into this weekend, but the Zons are looking first to take down Beantown. With 4 of the top 10 scoreres in the WPL in the backline, and a strong forward presence this weekend is shaping up to be very exciting for the Zons, but as Roger would say, this is the fun part of the season, not the easy part. This will be a hard fought match by both teams!
